Today Valve re-released an official Ranked mode in a game I played a lot last year called Deadlock. This game is a 3rd person shooter MOBA which isn’t yet officially released, though at this point it has been fairly widely available to and played by many people. I had a ton of fun playing this game when I originally played it, with the biggest friction being that although I’m highly fluent and proficient in MOBA-style games, I’m not as experienced or skilled with shooter games or extremely movement-heavy games. They’ve changed this game an awful lot since I originally played and enjoyed it and honestly, though there have been some great additions to the game and the game has gained a lot of popularity since then overall, I’m not a big fan overall of where the game has ended up. When I play Deadlock I find myself always looking for the level of fun I had with it when I originally played it, but it just doesn’t seem to come. Maybe it’s because when I was originally playing it it felt like something forbidden that I was indulging in at the cost of what I felt at the time was an inflection point in my life that required the energy that I directed towards it.
Anyways, I recently played this game with some friends a decent amount after it seemed we had all gotten bored with Marathon, but I don’t think I’ll be playing the ranked mode or dedicating myself further to the game. I still think it’s awesome, though, I love the aesthetic, I love the theme for the pre-alpha Neon Prime version of the game, I love the theme for the game when I played it, and I also love the themes found in the game currently.
