I have a lot of criticism for this film honestly. As someone who really enjoyed Nathan For You and found some parts of the The Rehearsal interesting, I feel like this movie embodied a lot of what I considered to be the most frustrating about The Rehearsal. First of all I’d like to say that the story of Elizabeth Holmes and her new partner are not particularly interesting or noteworthy. They are extremely privileged and pretty awful people of which just feels totally mundane to me. While that doesn’t mean there is nothing interesting at all about them, I feel like there are a lot of people, either deeply unprivileged or incredibly accomplished, whose stories warrant far more attention. If we say that there is a story truly worth exploring here, though, then it becomes a huge issue when Nathan repeatedly allows crucial details to be completely overlooked and go unexplored so that we may, in place, go deep down comparatively irrelevant rabbit-holes. I do think there is an audience for this film that truly enjoys its style of film-making despite my criticism though, and the film isn’t entirely without intrigue, just that it ends up being about Nathan’s film-making style and the culture we currently live in more than anything.
